Our courses are usually free, unless otherwise specified.
Our employability courses have been designed to equip learners with the range of tools, techniques, skills and most importantly the confidence to put them in the best position to apply for employment opportunities. Many of the skills taught are transferrable into employment but also useful within day to day life, such as interview skills, motivation and time management.
Level 1 – 8 Days
Our most popular employability course, Positive Change is designed to give learners the opportunity to learn and practice a range of skills that will better their chances of finding employment. CVs, application forms and job search are covered within this course, but most of content is about getting the learners to reflect and identify their transferrable skills, whilst equipping them with the communication and personal skills, providing them with the emotional intelligence tools to assist them with breaking down barriers to help them achieve their goals.
Our drop-in work club is open to everybody, and runs at our centre in Redruth (please call for dates and times) this is available (by prior arrangement) for groups of a minimum of 8 across Cornwall. Here learners can access personalised support and one to one training, help with CVs and covering letters, access to computers for Universal Job match and online applications, learn interview techniques and explore job and self-employment opportunities.
IT and Technology
We have a mobile ICT suite which allows us to deliver computer and tablet courses at a venue that suits our learners and supporting organisations. Our courses are structured so that within each topic there is a basic, intermediate and advanced option – allowing learners to progress as far as they need to.
ITQ (IT User Skills)
Level 1 / Level 2 / Level 3 – 8 Days / 10 Days / 12 Days
ITQs are nationally recognised, and are valued by employers as being a benchmark IT qualification. There are a wide range of units, which can be combined so that the qualification meets the specific needs of the learner / workplace. This can involve use of email, word processing, spreadsheets, internet safety and much more. The learner will compile a portfolio of evidence which will come from a variety of practical tasks, tutor observations and professional discussions with the tutor. Throughout the course learners will be able to put their newly acquired computer skills into practice.
Step up to IT
Level 1 – 6 Days
This course teaches learners how to get to grips with basic computer use, and equips them with the skills needed to use IT to search for work. It covers a range of helpful jobseeking tips, as well as learning how to send emails, creating a CV, completing online job applications and using the government’s Universal Jobmatch site.
Teaching and Supporting People
These courses are designed for people teaching & supporting people outside of the college environment. As well as covering the qualification criteria, learners will have the opportunity to learn about some of the challenges of community based delivery and the strategies that can be used to engage with and support people who may have multiple barriers to learning.
Award in Education and Training (AET)
Level 3 – 6 Days
These qualifications are nationally recognised teaching qualifications for use within the adult learning sector. For those wishing to teach, then the AET and CET will provide the perfect base on which to do so. The AET provides a firm foundation to those new to teaching and will equip learners with a number of tools and strategies to help them with their delivery. The CET takes things a step further and will allow learners to delve deeper into how people learn, and how different teaching methods can get different results, including action learning, personalisation and the strategies required to plan and develop effective and engaging courses.
Certificate in Assessment / Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment
–Previously A1 Assessor and V1 Internal Verifier Awards
Level 3 / Level 4
These qualifications are the new standard for anyone wanting to assess or verify qualifications, including NVQs and Apprenticeships. There is a selection of units that learners can undertake depending on the extent of their assessing / verifying, and both qualifications have an element of knowledge and understanding as well as the need to actively assessing / verifying learners work. If you are interested in undertaking either element then get in touch and we will explore your specific needs and the best way forward.
Advice and Guidance
Designed to accredit current knowledge as well as exploring new strategies, skills and techniques. These courses are suitable for anyone delivering advice or guidance to individuals in a wide range of topics. Learners need to be working within this sector.
A selection of courses that are designed to allow learners to develop their own personal skills in areas that will help them equally well in life, as in work.
Level 1 – 6 Days
A course built around games and challenges which are designed to develop team work, communication and problem solving skills. Great for volunteers and employees.
Level 1 – 6 Days
Packed full of tools, techniques and tips, this course will equip learners with the skills needed to manage their budget. Areas covered include; how to budget, how to cope on a limited budget, what is value for money, savings and opportunities to save money by shopping for the best deals. Learners will develop their own budget plan as part of the course.
This course will allow learners to explore how to plan and move into their own rented property, and learn skills such as personal money management, financial products and services, applying for housing, moving home, looking after a new home and how to manage personal health & hygiene.
NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) (we can deliver parts of the NLP as a non accredited course)
Level 3 / Level 5 – 13 days over several weeks / 22 days
Through a mixture of theory and hands-on learning, learners develop a psychological approach to understanding ourselves, our behaviours and how we relate to others. NLP is the basis of many coaching and motivational programmes, it forms part of sales and management training, and is used extensively in personal and work development. This course is designed to equip learners with tools and techniques for practical use of NLP, as well as a theoretical understanding of how NLP works. This includes; the background and history NLP – what it is and where it came from, core patterns in NLP – looking at human communication patterns, body language and how ‘we’ make sense of the world, altered states and mindfulness – looking at the human mind, conscious and unconscious processing.
Whether you work in, or are looking to work in a specific industry, we have a range of qualifications and support available to enable learners to apply for the relevant industry licenses.
6 Days – £300 (funding may be available)
This course is for individuals intending to work within the construction industry. The qualification covers risk assessment, working at height, manual handling, improving health and safety at work, safe operation of equipment and the importance of fire safety. It will help prepare learners for the the CSCS test, which are arranged for you following the course. Revision materials are provided, and CSCS card is free upon successful completion of the test.
Work Based Learning
For those working in specific industries (or wishing to do so) we offer a wide range of specific courses designed to help learners enter into new employment areas, as well as progressing within current ones. The nature of these courses is that the majority are delivered via work based learning, so the level and length of the course differs for each workplace. Level 2 / Level 3 – 3 Months / 6 Months
Its easy to deal with customers, but achieving good customer service isn’t as easy! These courses will develop skills in customer service such as verbal communication, body language, customer relations, reflective practice and making a positive first impression.
Level 2 / Level 3 – 3 Months / 6 Months<
For those working within this field, these courses allow the opportunity to gain recognition for existing skills, as well as encouraging the learner to reflect on possible areas for development and equipping them with the skills to do so.

We offer Functional Skills qualifications at Levels 1 & 2 for English, Maths and ICT.
Courses for Fun
For many, getting involved in learning new skills is simply nothing more than the chance to meet new people and get involved in something new. We offer a wide range of “courses for fun” and some of the most popular ones are listed below. If you have an idea for a course of your own, give us a call. Under NOCN we can access units from finger knitting through to Irish dance, so no request is a daft request!
